West Islip High School holds National English Honor Society Induction

West Islip High School held the first annual National English Honor Society Induction Ceremony recently. Forty-nine, high-achieving students were inducted into the Ancient Mariner Chapter, led by Karen Appollo, Director of English Language Arts K-12, and Assistant Principal Joann Hilbert. Music was provided by the High School String Ensemble with Director Judith Hayes.

Among the highlights of the evening was the special honorary induction of Superintendent of Schools Dr. Beth Virginia Blau, shown with bouquet, described by Appollo in her introduction as having extremely high standards, determination, and dedication. "The West Islip school community continues to flourish in all disciplines, as evidenced by the extensive grants and scholarships awarded to teachers and students."

Appollo continued on to say, "Dr. Blau is a lover of education. When you consider the many degrees she has earned throughout the years, it is easy to see why she so fervently supports education for all members of the West Islip community. She knows how a solid education can shape one's life; this understanding is the guiding force in her superintendency."

English teacher and Honor Society Advisor Nicole Herzog, shown at the podium, led the new Honor Society officers in the oath. Elected were, left to right, Historian Melissa Young, Vice President Kelly Fleming and President James Napoli. Not in photo is Secretary Kathryn Sullivan.
