Babylon students collect snacks for troops in Iraq
In between his first and second tour, he stopped by to visit his alma mater. Teacher Cindy Theiss asked how she and her current students could help him and his comrades. "We need snacks," he replied, "definitely snacks, and also toiletries." So that's just what he will be receiving in about a week from the seventh graders in the Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) at Babylon Junior-Senior High School. The students collected many of the troops' favorites, including granola bars, boxed them up, and with assistance from the Babylon Women's Club, which is covering the cost of mailing, shipped it on its way. "We sent an earlier test package with the help of sixth graders," Theiss said, "and we were happy to learn that it arrived there rather quickly." SPC Young communicated a thank you, adding that the contents were gone in an instant. Packaged in the seventh graders' dozen or so cartons are also letters each of them wrote, offering good wishes and a safe return home.
Shown in the photo are the AEP students with advisors Cindy Theiss, Peggy Holguin, Sean Burgoyne and Marshall Aykroyd. Holding photos of Brian is Holly Genova, who filled her letter with news of Babylon happenings. "This is important," she said. "He's defending people's rights and we need to support him." The students' messages are the English piece of AEP and cost calculations represent the math.
