Puppets help to teach languages of the world in West Islip

"What a fun way to learn a new language," commented an observer recently at the West Islip Public Library. She was watching Udall Road Middle School students performing a puppet show in both English and Spanish. In attendance at the 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. performances on March 22 for the children's department were pre-schoolers and their families.

The students sang songs and read books and also created performance stages using their artistic talents, in addition to their speaking skills.

According to World Languages Director Carmen Campos, a variety of classes and teachers were at the public library during March, including Monica Sandford and her French 3 Honors class, Athena Born and her Spanish 5 AP and Syracuse University students, Deanna Martin and her American Sign Language class from Beach Street Middle School, and Paola Nilsen and her Italian 4 Honors students, in addition to Elyse Patti's Spanish students from Udall Road.
