ESL program culminated foreign language week at LHS

Foreign Language Week held at Lindenhurst High School included guest speakers, a varied school lunch menu, a poster contest, a French breakfast and special presentations by ESL students. ESL students culminated the week by sharing their personal stories of living in another country and how different it is from life in America.

Students Anna Kostyuk, Slavek Mankevych, Maryana Shcherban and Sofiya Tabaka talked about life in the Ukraine. "The clothing is much different. There are no huge malls, just simple stores." "The kids get married and have babies much earlier than in America," said Slavek. "The popular sports are soccer and volleyball" "There are very few McDonalds and a lot more snow."

Students Bhaumik Patel and Nayan Patel here from India only for six months talked about the schools they attended "The schools in India are small. There are about 60 students in one room. Three students share one bench and the boys and girls didn't mix. We got a lot more homework and only one month off in the summer," explained Nayan.

The end of the program featured LHS junior Morgan Murray showing the students Irish Step Dancing. Morgan is ranked 5th in the region and practices 3 hours a day. She wears special hard leather shoes, gold costume, and wig. Morgan must keep her arms still throughout the dance.
