Gus Schmitt: longtime owner of Keyser's Florist

Gustave "Gus" K. Schmitt, Jr., longtime owner of Keyser's Flowers in Babylon, died April 5, 2007 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Florida. He was 77 years old.

He was born May 28, 1929 in Elmsford, New York and spent most of his life on Lucinda Drive in Babylon. In 1985 he retired from the flower business and moved to Vero Beach, Florida in 1987.

Mr. Schmitt was a member of St. John the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach, a travel enthusiast, had been a member of the Power Squadron in Babylon and a member of various golfing and bowling leagues.

He leaves behind his daughter, JoAnne of Vero Beach, Florida; his two grandchildren and his dear friend, Janet Shea of Vero Beach. He was predeceased by his first wife of 31 years, Anne Marie in 1983; his second wife of 9 years, Mildred in 1993; his companion of 13 years, Madie Gilbert and his son Robert in 1991.

A memorial service was held at the Heron Cay Clubhouse in Vero Beach on April 10, 2007. Graveside services are to be held at a later date at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn. Arrangements were under the direction of the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home & Crematory in Vero Beach, Florida.
