WB student struck by car and injured; district helps other students cope "Right now, there is hope." That is how West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Mel Noble described the condition of 13- year-old Simone Benjamin, who was struck and seriously injured on Route 109 at Arnold Avenue in West Babylon Tuesday, May 29. Simone sustained two fractured legs and a head and neck injury and was reportedly recovering last week. Her family has asked for their privacy, said Noble, who declined to discuss the student further. In the meantime, the school district has reached out to many of the student's friends, providing them with counseling, if necessary, and giving them an opportunity to talk and ask questions about the accident. "I can say that all of them are being taken care of," said Noble. "The family of Simone is very gracious and we want to respect their wishes and keep the lines of communication open." Sources said that the students who were with Simone all received counseling and the school was in touch with the families to ensure that in the event they needed any additional support it would be provided. Students in the school Simone attended also made tee shirts imprinted with positive slogans to help raise their spirits, and the hope of Simone's recovery, they said. They also wrote her cards and letters. Police said that Simone was crossing south on Route 109 with three friends at approximately 6:15 p.m. when the accident occurred. Apparently, the four girls hesitated at the light, and Simone continued to cross. She was struck by a 2005 Buick LaSabre traveling northwest in the right lane. It was operated by John McLaughlin, 62 of 390 Bethpage Rd., Copiague. Witnesses said the driver, who was obviously distraught at the scene, had the green light and no charges were filed against him. Many people rushed to Simones assistance as they waited for police and rescue workers to arrive. Her three friends, who were in shock over the accident, were also helped by passersby. The youngsters maintain that the light was yellow when they started to cross.
Simone was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was admitted. McLaughlin was not injured and his vehicle was impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing.
