Heard It On The Grapevine
LOTS HAS HAPPENED. The snow Birds are back from their annual April trek to New Smyrns Beach. Though the numbers are down, the gang still managed to have a great time with lots of parties, punch on the beach and dinner at local restaurants. Among those who enjoyed the beautiful weather: Joan and Bud St. John, Sue Howell, Mary Rinklin, Katharine Fallon, Shirley Skeffington and her sister Libby Orr. They were joined by former Babylon residents Mary Eileen and Dr. Tom McLaughlin who now live in New Smyrna where Tom practices medicine and Nancy and Al Tuthill. Another frequent visitor was "Johnnie" Walbridge who came over from his Orlando home Joan Cotton, formerly of Babylon now divides her time between New Hampshire and New Smyrns. Everyone said "chalk up another great year for New Smyrns Beach." AND MORE WINTER FLORIDA VISITORS ARE BACK HERE IN BABYLON. Talked to Joe Leone - It's great to have him back and we love to hear his beautiful voice in St. Joseph choir; Mary Freund spent three months in Stuart where she had lots of Babylonians to visit with; Carmen and Ray Accettella are home from their Florida home, Jim Rafter is back and lots more. SOME SAD NEWS TOO. Real old timers will remember the Bross family who lived here in the Village on Prospect Street where Mr. Bross was the organist for the Episcopalian Church back in the 1930s. Just heard from his sister Nancy Bross who lives in Pennsylvania that Bob Bross died in Florida after a long illness. Bob was a Colonel in the U.S. Marie Crops and served with great distinction in the Pacific theatre. He leaves his wife Pat and their daughter Nancy. Burial services were held in Arlington Cemetery. Bob was a genuine hero - we send our sympathy to his beautiful family. THE HALPIN FAMILY IS BACK after a marvelous flight to California where they had a ball attending the wedding of John Halpin to Lynn Yerkes in Lafayette. Everyone in the family led by John's mother Rosemarie, made the trip including children and grandchildren and brothers and sisters of the bride and groom, and all enjoyed the beautiful festivities at the happy occasion. AND SPEAKING OF THE HALPINS, how about it Patrick, is Al Gore going to enter the race for the Presidency? Must call him to see if he has the inside track - we know that Patrick is a close friend of the former vice president. We'll let you know when we know. THERE'S GOOD NEWS FOR THE DAVE BISHOP FAMILY. Dave and his wife are expecting an addition to their family this fall. So, David will not be running for office this year - he remains happy in his New York City law firm - but we hope he will resume his political career in the future. Dave, we need you back in politics and government. Meantime, very best wishes for the new baby. WHAT A WAY TO START: The engagement party for Kelly McLaughlin and Roy Fischer was a fun-filled success. Molly McGuire's Restaurant was overflowing with friends and family, like, of course, the couples' beaming moms and dads and travel buddy Maureen Walsh, new parents, Chris and Rich Helm, old neighbors Arlene and Artie Soto and Regina and Charles Bouve. Kelly is thought of as the "Miss Congeniality" of Good Sam's Human Resources Department. The dance music pleased all generations, and the multichoice food was fabulous. We wish this cute couple best of luck and love. LOVE THE VILLAGE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE. Had a great seat to watch the parade go by. As usual, it was terrific. The Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Panthers Marching Band, the Hibernians Band, the Fire Department all gave us a big thrill. Got a suggestion though. In years past, the West Babylon Marching Eagles marched with the Babylon parade - they're one of the best in the state. Now they march in West Babylon where crowds are sparse - we miss them a lot. We notice the West Babylon Scouts still march with us, so why not have both bands with us next year? Just a suggestion. WE'RE WAY BEHIND, so we apologize if your item was left out. We hope to catch up real soon. NOW IT CAN BE TOLD, this year's Conklin House volunteer of the year is none other than Mary Ellen Sullivan. Mary Ellen has worked tirelessly on behalf of many Village causes - so mark your calendar for the big celebration, Sunday, July 8. You'll be reading much more about the big day in weeks to come.
