West Islip students move on to National Geographic Bees
West Islip students who have won at school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee now have a chance at winning a $25,000 college scholarship.
At the school-level Bee, students answered oral questions on geography, which was the first round in the 19th annual national Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. West Islip students are competing with their peers from around the United States and in the five U.S. territories that are participating. Challenging questions were taken from fourth to eighth grade curriculum and current events. First place school winners, including West Islip' Sean McShane in Maureen Murphy's Bayview class, Shazeen Afzal in Liza Hunt's Captree class, Liam Nowakowski in Kevin McLoughlin's Manetuck class, Michael Carboni in Patricia Heaton's Oquenock class, Sarah Sutton in Theresa Robertson's Bellew class, and Zachary Mike in Krista Sexton's Westbook class, are taking written tests and up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on March 30th.
The National Geographic Society will provide an allexpenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the state champions and their teacher-escorts for the National Geographic Bee in May. The top winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the society.
According to West Islip teacher Vivian Hollinger, the second and third place elementary school winners are: Amanda Quinn and Eric Harris at Bayview, Marie Hadjichristoforou and Christopher Hering at Captree, Lilyan Guastella and Nicholas Capone at Manetuck, Vincent Cramer and Gabriella Minicozzi at Oquenock, Victoria Koffsky and Caitlin Cosentino at Bellew, and Christina Regan and Craig Nelson at Westbrook.
Among the winning questions were: Reaching an elevation of 9,570 feet, Mount Olympus is the highest point in which European country? (Greece) On what large island in the Indian Ocean, that is crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, do hundreds of species of butterflies live? (Madagascar) With low coastal plains along both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, Columbia borders which Central American country? (Panama)
