West Babylon School District launches annual summer reading program for K-12 students

Shown in the photo, Santapogue Elementary student Amanda Ruppel gets an early start on her summer reading.
Reading is an important part of literacy development, and in order to promote reading as an enjoyable lifetime activity, the West Babylon School District is launching its annual summer reading program for all incoming first- to twelfth-grade students. According to research, children who read during the summer months perform better academically in the fall when school resumes, while those who do not lose academic ground. Furthermore, current research shows that it is best for students to read four to five books over the summer months.

The West Babylon Summer Reading Program requires all students to read a minimum of two grade-appropriate books. As an important partner in the literacy initiative, parents are asked to please encourage their children to become active readers this summer. The Get a Clue @ YOUR LIBRARY summer reading campaign and multiple copies of the West Babylon School District's summer reading recommendations are available at the West Babylon Public Library. The books are color-coded by grade level, so they are easy to locate. Parents and students can also log on to the West Babylon School District's website, www.wbschools.org, to find the summer reading lists and assignments.
