Babylon American Legion celebrates 88th anniversary

The American Legion Babylon Post #94, located at 22 Grove Place is celebrating its 88th anniversary. It was chartered in 1919 as a community service organization and is one of the earliest Chapters of The American Legion. The American Legion is an organization of veterans of the United States armed forces who served in a time of war or conflict. It was founded in 1919 by World War I veterans and was chartered by Congress in September 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help community service organization. Today it is the world's largest veterans' organization with approximately three million members in nearly 15,000 local American Legion Post worldwide. Since its inception, the American Legion has worked tirelessly to improve the conditions for veterans and was instrumental in 1921 in the creation of the U.S. Veteran's Bureau, predecessor to the Department of Veteran's Affairs. Today, the primary political activity of the Legion is to continue to lobby for the interests of veterans, including the support and funding for veterans' benefits such as pensions and the Veterans Affairs hospital system.

The Post system, of which Babylon Post #94 is a member, is the community service outlet of the American Legion and provides opportunities for social activity and mutual support among the community's veterans. It encourages members to perform community services in an effort to make our communities better places in which to live, and to help build a strong future for America by teaching patriotism to our Nation's youth.

The American Legion Babylon Post #94 sponsors and participates in many community events and activities including its Babylon Scholarship Program; sponsorship of two local Boy Scout troops; Boy State, a participating program for high school students where each participants becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government; Support Our Troops drives; the Babylon Village Memorial day and Veterans Day Parade and children's holiday parties. In addition, Post #94 provides veterans benefit counseling and honor guards for wakes and funerals of veterans. It also makes its hall space available for occasional community group meetings. It welcomes and encourages all qualified veterans to join its ranks.
