Legislator Stern collects used eyeglasses for Gift of Sight program

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD is collecting used eyeglasses for "Give the Gift of Sight", an organization that collects used eyeglasses and distributes them to the poor in developing countries. Give the Gift of Sight also provides eye exams for the poor and provides new glasses in the United States.

"Give the Gift of Sight" was founded on the belief that clear vision is a basic right, not a luxury. The organization is committed to delivering clear vision to those in need around the world regardless of their ability to pay. Jason Mogen, a junior at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, has already collected more than 2,000 pairs of glasses.

"Two hundred fifty million people around the world suffer from vision impairments and many of them cannot afford glasses that would dramatically improve the quality of their lives and enable them to go to school and to work," Legislator Stern said. "Donating glasses that we can no longer use is a simple thing we can do to help people around the world lead better and more independent lives."

Give the Gift of Sight also helps those in our own community, operating vision vans that service local clinics, such as the Dolan Family Health Center.

Glasses can be dropped off at the District office, 1842 E. Jericho Tpke., Huntington, New York 11743. For more information, call 854-5100.
