Babylon High School class of 1947 reunion June 23

Babylon High School's Class of 1947 is planning a 60-year reunion on Saturday, June 23.

Class members will sit with the high school's 2007 graduates at the morning commencement ceremony on the athletic field adjacent to Argyle Lake, as a symbol of the continuity of generations. Following the graduation, the 1947 class members and their guests will gather for brunch at Southward Ho Country Club, Montauk Highway, West Bay Shore.

The Class of 1947 had 127 members, 40 of whom are known to be deceased. When the class assembled, World War II was in progress. In 1945 Harry S. Truman became president. In mid-1946, Annie Get Your Gun with Ethel Merman was the rage on Broadway and in 1947 Jackie Robinson became the first Black to make the big leagues.

Jane Roberts Lewis, a member of the reunion committee, said "It was long ago, but it seems like yesterday. We feel that our presence at the 2007 graduation will help link all our generations in an expression of love for Babylon High School and of our confidence in the future." Other committee members noted that if 60-year graduates of the school had been at the 1947 commencement, firsthand testimony about Babylon in 1887 would have been available.

Friends of the Class of 1947 who may know the whereabouts of members still not contacted, or who themselves wish to attend, should call committee Joseph DeLucca at 631-669-9181 for details.
