L.I. Walk for Babylon Breast Cancer Coaltion to be held June 9 and 10

AnneMarie Martino
AnneMarie Martino of Babylon, a member of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC), is a walker who does 15 to 20 miles a week. But the fact that she is a walker is not the reason she, along with others from the BBCC, will be participating in the LI2DAY Breast Cancer Walk. The event, June 9 and 10, is held yearly to raise funds for 15 Long Island breast cancer support organizations.

This will be her fourth year in joining the hundreds of others. "I do this, she said, "because I can and for those that can't, either because they are no longer with us or are not physically capable. And I do this in in memory of my mom," who was a victim. The LI2DAY Breast Cancer Walk, will cover 35 miles from Smith Point County Park to Cathedral Pines for an overnight. Here a small village is set up for the walkers including tents, hot showers, massage therapists, chiropractors, podiatrists, entertainment and a hot meal. They then return the next day to Smith Point.

To put a face on the crisis of breast cancer among women, Martin points out that over the past three years she had listed the names of lost friends as a memorial on her shirt. Sadly Martin laments, "I'm running out of shirt."

She believes that as the Walk grows in size and importance it "will help spread the word faster and further" that there are women out there who must face the cruelty of breast cancer every day. As the movement grows new walkers join raising much needed financial resources and new volunteers get a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. It's the commitment to spread the word.
