West Islip to offer self-defense workshop for female teenagers

The West Islip physical education department is sponsoring a self-defense workshop for female teenagers (grades eight through 12) on Friday, June 8, 7:30-9 p.m. in the high school gym. According to Wayne Shierant, director of health, recreation and athletics, this program for West Islip girls presents the latest in self-defense techniques and awareness and consists of both a discussion about personal safety and the opportunity to learn and practice a variety of physical maneuvers.

By learning how most assailants select their victims and how most attacks progress, participants can learn how to keep themselves safe and how to escape potentially dangerous situations. Instructor Robert Gravel of North Babylon will offer a workshop on highly-effective, easy-to-learn physical maneuvers that can be used against an assailant during an attack. Time will be spent teaching the girls how to maximize the effectiveness of the strike. A role-playing segment will follow during which they will practice elbow strikes and kicks, chokes, bear hugs and grabs in a controlled environment.

This program is free, but participants are asked to register by notifying their main office secretary.
