Mary “Mollie” Owens: longtime West Babylonian
by Tiffany Elliott

West Babylon resident Mary "Mollie" Owens, who immigrated to the United States from Ireland, died March 29, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

She was 95 years old and had lived on Quarter Street in West Babylon for 55 years. Fiercely independent, she was still cutting her own lawn and hedges at the age of 90, according to her daughter, Pat.

Born October 14, 1991 in Offaly, Ireland to Elizabeth and John Murray, she came to the U.S. in 1927 and lived in New York State before moving to Long Island.

According to her daughter, she was a devout member of Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church in West Babylon and was a devoted mother, kind friend and animal lover. She also loved to attend Native American Indian powwows, garden and spend time with her beloved family.

Mrs. Owens leaves behind her beloved daughter, Patricia Anderson and her husband Steve of West Babylon; as well as many friends. She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 55 years, James in 1979.

She reposed at the Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home in Babylon on March 31 and April 1, 2007. A Mass for Christian Burial was held on April 2, 2007 at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church, West Babylon celebrated by Rev. Mickey Brancroft, Rev. Brian McNamara, Rev. Gerald Cestare and Rev. Edward Koch. Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery.
