Legislator Stern supports County Executive Levy's plan

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD voted with a bi-partisan majority to approve County Executive Steve Levy's plan for redrawing legislative districts at the Legislature's April session.

The plan, which will take effect after the 2010 census, will re-draw the lines in a fair and non-partisan manner. The plan calls for appointment of retired judges, chosen evenly between the two majority parties, who will determine the new boundaries of legislative districts. It is designed to keep a political majority from redrawing districts in convoluted ways to protect their hold on power.

"It is very important for people to have confidence in our electoral system and this legislation is an important step in removing backroom politics, gerrymandering of districts, and partisan gamesmanship from the electoral process of the past, " Legislator Stern said. "This type of reform poses some risk to incumbents, but it is necessary to insure that districts are not drawn to protect those already in office and to disenfranchise voters. I ran for office because I wanted to effect positive reform in the system and this is an important step in that process."
