Legislator Stern joins Sheriff DeMarco and inmates in clean-up of Commack Road

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD joined Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco and low-security inmates from the "Sheriff 's Labor Assistance Program" (SLAP) for a clean up of Commack Road in Dix Hills. SLAP, instituted by Sheriff DeMarco, places screened, low security inmates into labor projects such as road clean-up, providing benefits to both the community and to the inmates themselves, giving them work skills and training to assist them when they are released.

"Litter along the side of the roads is an eyesore for everyone. The SLAP program addresses this problem and provides work opportunities for inmates which hopefully they will use in the future," said DeMarco. "I receive many constituent calls about litter along our roads," Legislator Stern said. 'This program not only provides inmates with skills, but also community service and a sense of pride in place. It is beneficial to everyone involved and I hope to utilize this program to clean other roads in our community."
