People in the News

Students in Frank Sblendorio and Susan Burkart's classes at Captree Elementary School in West Islip display letters they've received in their Flat Stanley Project. The youngsters wrote letters to people all around the world asking them to respond back and share information on how they celebrate their holidays. The program is designed to learn about people and their customs. It's called Flat Stanley because in the children's story a paper cutout of Stanley is folded and placed in an envelope and mailed. According to the teachers, shown with the children, the responses have been "overwhelming, with answers coming from Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, the Queen of England, and President George W. Bush."
Shown, left to right, are Emily Crichton, seventh grader and winner of the Lindy Pride poster contest; Fran Naccarato, principal and Jamie Stanulis and Jenna Smakal, computer teachers. Missing is other Lindy Pride poster winner Jennifer Kobelski.
