W.I. website makes it easy to RSVP to reunion scheduled for May 19 The West Islip High School All-Years Reunion Picnic celebrating the school's 50th anniversary is calling all alumni back to school. The difference is there isn't a school bell ringing. Instead the district website is calling all graduates, teachers, employees and friends to RSVP electronically. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th, from noon to 5 p.m., rain or shine. Offering the district website (www.wi.k12.ny.us) as the easiest way for former students, staff and their families to say they're returning to school, Principal Ken Hartill reports that hotel rooms for out-of-state guests can also be reserved online. Additionally, graduates can see who has already said they're coming. Registering online will allow the district to provide appropriate parking, shuttle buses if needed, and to order the right amount of food for the afternoon. Guests are also invited to bring their own picnic baskets, "but in the case of out-of-towners," says Hartill, "they're probably not going to be in a position to make lunch for themselves. A food court of local restaurants will be set up." The All-Years Reunion Picnic is free to everyone, although it is hoped that guests will join PAWS, the West Islip Education Foundation, which recently purchased numerous SMART Boards and a baby grand Yamaha piano for the district. Raffles and prizes will be available, with proceeds going to PAWS. Among the prizes is a limo ride to New York City and theatre tickets. Tours of the high school to show off its reconstruction will be provided by students every half hour. Also every half hour there will be photos taken of each class. Additionally, alumni will also be able to browse "decade tables" of memorbilia and they will be able to purchase souvenirs from the school store. "Although this reunion picnic will be informal," says Hartill, "there will be a schedule of events so that everyone will be aware of what's available and at what times, including musical presentations and alumni sports." Special activites for children and granchildren will include games and face painting. For additional information, contact Hartill at K.hartill@wi.k12.ny.us.
The picnic follows the Captree 50th Birthday Brunch at the Captree Elementary School from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, and also the West Islip Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, May 18, at Captain Bill's Restaurant.
