Travelers' Club news
The eleventh meeting of the Travelers' Club was held at the home of Lynn Simmons on April 9.
Lynn Simmons presented the evening's paper on Mexican cooking. Aztec food is well documented by Bernal Diaz de Castillo who accompanied Cortez and Father Sahagun who wrote in the 1530s. The staple food then was corn and it still is today. Emperor Montezuma loved a drink combining chocolate, vanilla and honey. Through the ages Mexicans have patronized local markets seeking out the corn, tomatoes, beans, chilies and squash so popular in their diets. Holiday meals are elaborate. One hosted by Frieda Kahlo, an artist herself and married to famous muralist Diego Rivera, celebrated the Day of the Dead. With the table decorated with traditional sugar skulls and skeletons, Mariachi music playing and her mother's picture on the flower-filled table, Kahlo served a huge meal in honor of dead family members.
The evenings' refreshments included Mexican rice pudding, orange slices with cinnamon and sugar, and Mexican trifle and wedding cookies.
