Vermont Dairy Association visits Babylon Grade School

Vermont was in Suffolk County recently, for the very first time, and sixth graders in Babylon Memorial Grade School were excited.

Vermont Dairy Farmers' Association sent Cabot Creamery Chef John Ashton and Health Education Coordinator Kelly Littlefield (pictured) to provide the children with guidelines and tools to promote healthier eating habits, which includes having foods that provide calcium for strong bones. They also brought food samples, pencils spotted with cow spots, and souvenir toy cows.

The students were in Cindy Theiss' Home & Career Skills class, and food, nutrition, and becoming wise consumers are part of the curriculum. Ms. Theiss, a coordinator for the Long Island Family and Consumer Science Teachers' Association, scheduled the free visit.

"This is an example of the real world coming in the classroom, and this is the perfect program for this grade level because the children are at the age where they're making some of their own meals." For recipes see www.cabotcheese.com.
