Richard Ivery: weekend Fire Island ferry captain
A Babylon High School graduate, he later served in the United States Coast Guard during the Ko- rean War and WWII. Until he was 72 years old he worked for the New York State of Transportation in the parkway commission and later the real estate division. According to his daughter, Lynn Stardal, he loved to be near the Great South Bay and worked as a ferry captain for so long because he loved boating. In addition to his daughter and her husband Artie Stardal of East Islip, Mr. Ivery leaves behind his daughter Ellen Conway and her husband Bill of Babylon; his grandchildren: Melissa, Alex and Amanda; and other loved ones and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Gloria, a lifelong Babylon resident. A private interment service was held at the National Cemetery at Calverton on April 3, 2007, with a Coast Guard Honor Guard.
Donations inMr . Ivery's name can be sent to The Nature Conservancy for Bay Restoration, 250 Lawrence Hill Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724.
