Town of Babylon renews call for dredging of Fire Island Inlet
The Town dodged a bullet during this Nor'Easter, however beaches still remain vulnerable to erosion.
For decades, the Town of Babylon beaches have been sustained with the sand taken from the maintenance dredging of the Fire Island Inlet and placed on the Town's western beaches. This activity used to occur every two years. However, since federal funding has been cut, the US Army Corp of Engineers has not performed any main- tenance dredging of the Inlet in four years. Our beaches are eroding and with the two mild storms we had in the months of October and November and the Nor'Easter we had this past weekend, many of our beach areas have continued to erode leaving some areas at post Hurricane Gloria (1985) condition.
The Town is once again calling upon federal officials to reinstate funding for the immediate dredging of the Fire Island Inlet.
