Lindenhurst Schools propose $126.8 budget; programs intact Neil Lederer has been the Superintendent at Lindenhurst for five years and the proposed school budget has passed every time. This year, Lederer proposed a budget of $126.8 million in district expenditures, $7.4 million more than last years. He's hoping that providing the community with information about what is driving up costs, he'll be successful at winning support again this year. Real property taxpayers in Lindenhurst currently pay $154.23 per $100 of assessed value. Under the proposed spending plan, the rate would increase approximately $9.90 to $164.13. That would bring the annual cost for school taxes on a home in that district valued at $3,500 to $5,744.55 a year. Aside from the $41 million in teacher's salaries and $16 million for health and dental insurance, the next highest expenditures are for the state program with disability, which runs $14 million operations ($7.3 million) and contracted bus transportation ($7.2 million). "We do all we can to save money," Lederer said. "We work hard to sell [the budget] to the community and hopefully they will continue to support it." With growing trends of more and more school districts on Long Island having a tough time passing their budgets, the more presentations Lederer gives to the community, the better, he said. "We've gotten support from the community and haven't had to cancel any programs," Lederer said. The district is expected to have $52.9 million in revenues, up $3 million from last year. State aid is expected to pick up $46.4 million of that. Other high expenditures include maintenance ($3 million), supervision of regular school ($5.7 million), social security ($5 million) and the New York State teacher's retirement fund ($4.8 million). The athletic budget is $1 million. Lederer is proud, knowing the students in his district haven't faced austerity and have been able to take advantage of everything offered to them, he said. "Our budget provides wonderful programs which have been proven successful for our children," he said. Votes at every school district in New York State take place on May 15.
