West Islip students raise over $5,000 for St. Jude's

A Math-a-Thon benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was held recently in the Captree Elementary School in West Islip with teacher Justin DeMaio as coordinator. The Matha Thon is an educationally-based fund-raising, problem-solving program in which students obtain sponsors for the number of math problems completed in special workbooks.

In this project, the students who participate, learn to do more than just math; they also learn the importance of helping children who are less fortunate than themselves. The Captree students collected over $5,000 for St. Jude's. Individuals who raised more than $35 were presented with Six Flags tickets and those who raised more than $75 received backpacks.

Shown, left to right, are teacher Stacey Rennie, standing in for her student and grand prize winner Andrea Seuss who was absent when this photo was taken, Mr. DeMaio, Emily Burton, Kiera Thompson and Nick Lopez and in the bottom row are Stephen Sabato, Ashley Lopez and Sam Ferrara.
