Harding Avenue Elementary kicks off PARP

Lindenhurst's Harding Avenue students kickedoff Parents as Reading Partners (PARP), a two week program geared at creating a love for reading for all students, with a special entertaining assembly featuring a TheaterWorks USA Cam Jansen performance of Emerald Elephant.

The PARP inauguration continued into the evening, as parents and their children filled Harding to participate in a variety of reading activities with a "Pig out on Books" reading night with special guests Farmer Minor and Daisy the Famous Pot Belly Pig. This year's Harding PARP theme was Go Hog Wild for Books. Other events included Author/Illustrator Night and Book Bonanza Game Night.

The program encourages parents to spend at least 15 minutes each day reading with their children with the hope that shared reading experience will foster good daily reading habits. Home activities included Reading Logs, Scavenger Hunt, Book Review and Visiting the Public Library.

In school activities included a Word of the Day, Library Trivia, Dress up for Reading, Book Swap, Stop, Drop and Read Day, and Proud to be a Pig day where Principal Mr. Chamberlin dressed up as a pig to show school pride.

PARP Coordinator and Chairperson, Lynn Dietz, exclaimed "PARP is a wonderful program to help our students to get family members engaged in reading at home. A big 'thank you' goes to our PTA for helping with the various programs each year.
