Dominick Girardi: retired LIRR employee & WWII Veteran

L o n g t i m e Babylon Village resident and beloved family man Dominick Girardi died February 16, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He was 86 years old and had lived on Litchfield Avenue in the Village he loved for almost 50 years.

Born December 15, 1920 in Queens to Josephine and Cosimo, he grew up in Jamaica, New York and later served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II.

For more than 40 years he worked for the Long Island Railroad as a track worker and inspector, retiring in 1980. According to his family, he so loved Babylon Village he never wanted to live elsewhere.

His daughter, Rita said he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was a kind, gentle and caring man with a ready smile.

"He was a just a very good soul who was always happy," she added.

In his spare time Mr. Girardi loved to fish on his son-in-law's boat "the Captain Rod" at Captree, read, play cards and gather to dance the Polka with his beloved family.

Mr. Girardi leaves behind his wife of almost 59 years, Phyllis; his daughter, Rita Bartenback and her husband George; his granddaughter, Lisa Marie Bartenback; many nieces and nephews; as well as other loved ones and friends.

He reposed at the Frederick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 21, 2007 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery with military honors.
