Albert Voorneveld tapped as new CHS Principal
by Chris Vaccaro

Albert Voorneveld, CHS principal
A l b e r t Voorneveld, the principal at Copiague Middle School, was appointed as the new principal of Copiague High School at a school board meeting on March 5. His position will officially start at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year.

Voorneveld, who has been in the district since 1971, will replace Michael Hodgekiss, the current principal, who is retiring after this school year.

"I'm anxious to get back into the hustle and bustle of the high school," Voorneveld said. "I want to continue on with the exciting things going on there now and to reconnect with the students and staff I've worked with in the past."

This is his 21st year as the middle school principal, and he'd be happy to finish his career there, but is also ready to accept new challenges.

"I'm really enjoying the moment," he says. "I never expected to be anything but a good middle school principal."

Voorneveld started as substitute teacher, and then taught as a social studies and special education teacher before moving into an administrative role as the director of special education, the director of [pupil and special services] and finally his current position.

There's been one constant in his approach from one position to the next, maintaining consistency and stability.

"I want to make a smooth transition into my new role," he said. "I have to maintain the growth and everything the district has accomplished."

Among the things he would like to improve on is the Regents passing rate. His goal of course, "Is to get a 100 percent passing," he said.

The Copiague district as a whole as come along way in the last few years and Voorneveld is extremely happy to be a part of it, in any capacity.
