AAUW hosts author at March meeting
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is an organization of 100,000 members nationwide that has been in existence for 125 years. Its mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. The AAUW Educational Foundation pro- vides funds for furthering post graduate education nationally and internationally. The Islip Area Branch, chartered in 1960, holds monthly meetings from September to April and hosts a Super Saturday luncheon, Spring Author's Luncheon, May Installation Dinner, and Summer Socials. It conducts a Sister-to-Sister conference for LI high school girls and a writing contest for middle school students in the eleven districts in Islip Town. Additionally it conducts voter registration drives at the area colleges, participates in candidate forums, and meets with local and state representatives to address political issues affecting women. In Roy's novel, a modern young Indian woman uncovers her mother's hidden past as a devotional dancer who defies her family. Ironically, her exceptional talent at Bharatanatyam, the oldest classical dance form of India, is the first step on her long journey toward independence. Professional Bharatanatyam dancer Nithica Nadgar performed selections from this ancient Temple dance which echoes Roy's mother's own love story.
