Copiague Loses in State Semifinals

Copiague made its first trip to the New York State semifinals this year. It was as far as it would go, though. The Eagles lost to perennial Class AA favorite Mount Vernon, 81-64.

Senior forward Richard Byrd scored a Class AA tournament record 34 points and truly left everything on the court.

The Eagles (21-4) trailed 12-0 to start the contest, and Byrd scored 11 points to bring the score to 25-15 after the first quarter. Mount Vernon, however, increased its lead to 50-26 after the first half and ran away in the second as well.

Mount Vernon was led by Michael Coburn who had 25 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.

Copiague seniors Robert Carpenter had 14 points and Dwight Gibson Jr. had eight.

North Babylon Semifinal Exit

Pushing a bus out of the snow may have been easier than playing Rush-Henrietta in the state AA final.

North Babylon's bus got stuck and players and coaches helped get it out, but no one could help during the 66-46 loss that night.

Rush is ranked 24th in the nation and is the defending state champion, so North Babylon was hoping to be close after the first half. The Bulldogs trailed 30-16, however.

Chanel Chisolm had 19 points, eight rebounds and eight steals to lead North Babylon (23-2).

Rush had a 24-2 record and lost to St. Michaels from Massachusetts and Christ the King, both possibly the best teams in their respective states.

Wyandanch's Season Finished

The tension peaked as East Aurora's Jessie Tarantino stood at the foul line with one second left in the New York State Class B semifinal against Wyandanch. The score was tied at 55, and she had two shots to win it.

She missed the first, and hit the second, sending Wyandanch packing after a 56-55 loss. There was a questionable call, however, against Wyandanch's Jessica Little, who says she didn't push or hit Tarantino. The officials said it was a bump, which is good enough for a foul in high school basketball.

It was the Warrior's (23-4) first trip to the state semifinals since 1988, a fond memory for head coach Warren Fuller, who passed the 500 win mark for his career this season and had dynasty like teams during the 80s.

The Warriors went on a 13-0 run in the third quarter to take a 34-32 lead and played neck-andneck basketball for the remainder of the contest.
