The Town of Babylon is preparing to complete the third phase of its improvements along Deer Park Avenue, a project that Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone said was long overdue.

"Frankly that roadway looked terrible, with weeds growing up from the medians," said Bellone. "We decided to work with the state to get something done."

The third phase, scheduled to begin this spring and be completed by the fall will include upgrading three sections of Deer Park Avenue, sprucing up the medians and adding Colonial lighting. It comes on the heels of two other phases of the project, completed in 2005 and 2007.

The cost of the three projects is being paid in full with a $500,000 grant from the Blumenfeld Development Corporation, developers for the proposed Tanger Outlet mall off Commack Road in Deer Park.

In 2006 a "Welcome to Deer Park Beautification Project" sign was added on the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Acorn Street, as well as a "Welcome to Deer Park" banners on the Colonial lighting. Three medians were landscaped and irrigated and electrcity was added for the Colonial lights.

In 2005, Colonial lighting with flowering baskets were added the beautification project also extended to the Long Island Rail Road embankments on Deer Park Avenue which received new landscaping on all four corners of the north and south side of the embankment.

Since Deer Park Avenue is a state roadway, Bellone said the Town had to get the state's approval before proceeding with the changes. It took several months of discussion and review but eventually the state agreed that the changes would improve the area, said Bellone.

Annmarie Jones, the Town's Director of Community Law to crack down on Development worked with the Town's engineering department in designing the changes to the medians and the result, according to Babylon Town Councilwoman Carol Quirk, helped to bring Deer Park a greater sense of community.

"They (Deer Park residents) love it," said Quirk, a 40-year Deer Park resident, "We waited a long time to get this done. I am absolutely delighted."
