Tougher Town Public Nuisance law is good; enforcment is even better

Babylon Town moved this week to strengthen its Public Nuisance Laws by assuming the legal authority to take eviction proceedings against anyone living in a home who is causing a disturbance. This is particularly important in cases of an absentee landlord who simply collects rent and takes no responsibility for what is happening on his or property nor its impact on his neighbors on a daily basis.

If we need to see a classic example of why this law is necessary, look at property at 37 Coolidge Avenue, Amityville. The home, according to its owner who lives in Roosevelt, has been taken over by squatters. Over a 9-month period last year, police raided the home three times and arrested those within on drug and weapons charges. Despite that, the problem persists and the landlord has done nothing to rectify the situation.

This home is adjacent to a school bus stop and children pass it every day on their way to and from school. it is in a residential area that is struggling against violence as well as gang and drug activity. What is taking place there in full view of the community counters everything residents, civic leaders and public officials are trying to accomplish. It sends the wrong message to our children.

In this instance the absentee landlord failed to act responsibly and adequately to protect his property. The result was that the community suffered.

Public officials cannot allow that to happen. Babylon's original Nuisance Law should have been applied as soon as the third police raid was conducted. The new law gives the Town even more powers that officials need to use effectively. We support the measure.
