John Quincy Adams in Deer Park makes the most of reading

The John Quincy Adams Primary School in Deer Park recently celebrated its fourth annual P.A.R.P. (Parents As Reading Partners) program in February. The program is a collaborative effort among parents, students and staff to build a reading partnership between home and school and to help foster the love of reading at home. The JQA goal was to read 100,000 minutes as a school, and the students and parents signed contracts agreeing to read together for 15 minutes or more each day during the two weeks of P.A.R.P.

This year's P.A.R.P. theme was Make The Most Of Reading and was kicked off on February 3. Activities included Pajama Story Night, an evening assembly with the kids attending wearing their pj's, and an author visit and book signing by Bernard Most. At the culmination of the program, JQA School Principal Kelly Diamond agreed to reward the students for their dedication by dressing up in a clown suit and dyeing her hair pink. She will also sit in the dunk tank at the school's field day held in the spring.
