RAIA fields questions from student reporters

Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,C,I,WF-East Northport) held a press conference with over a dozen reporters and editors from area high schools. The press conference was held at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills.

Students from the John Glenn High School, Half Hollow Hills East High School and North Babylon High School participated in the question and answer session. The event was part of a series of student press conferences aimed at increasing youth participation in state government. "I always enjoy visiting our schools and taking part in events such as student press conferences," Raia said. "This is a unique opportunity for students and their advisors to ask questions about not only state issues, but local and national issues or about my work as a lawmaker representing them in Albany."

Raia focused his press conference on recent successes on long-awaited legislation in the state Legislature including budget and ethics reform, and civil confinement. The press conference also centered on Raia and the Assembly Republican legislative agenda entitled "Road to Reform."

Key provisions from the plan include:

+Direct property tax relief for Long Island families and seniors

+Safer communities for our families

+Education reform with a focus on results and accountability

+Access to quality health care

"The questions asked by these future reporters today were insightful and challenging," Raia said. "Perhaps some day these enterprising young reporters will take their skills and turn them into stellar journalism careers."
