Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR THE IRISH when Jim Hawkins entertained us with his songs and Irish stories at the Conklin House last Sunday afternoon. This was a repeat performance for Jim and his third time at the Conklin House. Saw lots of Irish and "wannabe" Irish - Mac and Dr. Mitty Beyers were there (Mac's a real Irish gal). Sat next to Helen and Vinnie O'Shea and Gus Fischel. Muriel and Charlie Verschurren were there and so was Sue Borg, Kay Baker and Mary Gallagher. Our trustees Alice Vanderveldt and Debbie Basile were on hand, along with our wonderful hostess Karen Petz - they served delicious Irish tea and cookies. A beautiful basket of Irish goods was raffled off, and guess who the lucky winner was - the one person at the affair who was born in Ireland, Theresa Martin.

WE HEAR THAT LILY FLANAGAN'S IS THE PLACE TO BE these days. Village officials and community volunteers were all there last Sunday night to honor Pat Carley for her six years of outstanding service as President of the Beautification Society. Lots of speeches and plaques and praise for this most deserving gal. Pat, as most of our readers know, is our very popular Village Clerk. And we can look forward to continued success with our new president, Donna Consola, who was installed in January. (Great reports on the food too).

ONE OF THE OLDEST CHURCHES in our community, the Bethel A.M.E. Church on Cooper celebrated its 100th anniversary last week. Our Mayor Ralph Scordino was among the dignitaries who helped celebrate the happy occasion.

SAY GOODBYE TO THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HALL on Park Avenue. We hear that the building will be torn down to make way for five houses, which the area zoning permits.

HOW COULD WE FORGET LENNY'S? We did though when we didn't acknowledge the beautiful platter of London broil that his very popular meat market sent over to the "Busy Women" cocktail party at Joy Torrey's home recently. Also forgot to mention that Trustee Debbie Basile was at the party (she always support the "Busy women"), and that Claire Meirowitz won the beautiful basket of kitchen materials donated by Rosemary Reina.

GUESS WHAT BUSINESS IS BEING HONORED by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce this year? The Babylon Beacon will be honored at the annual event to be held at the Venetian Yacht Club on Wednesday, July 18th. The paper was founded way back in 1966 by Jane and Ed Wolfe, and has been a vital force in the community, bringing people the news, good and bad, happy times as well as sad ones, a constant factor in our lives. It will be a very high honor for all involved over the years. We'll keep you updated in future issues.

STATE OF THE VILLAGE ADDRESS. The President of the United States reports each year to the Congress on the state of the union, and here in Babylon Village, Mayor Scordino speaks to the "Busy Women" each year on the state of the Village. The Mayor spoke to us at the March luncheon at The Hook, and the state of the Village is excellent. Here are just some of this past year's accomplishments: an average of 100 trees were planted; 220 children participated in the golf clinic at the Village Golf Course; 250 players played in the men's, women's and teen leagues; five high schools used the course for practice and JV matches; 800 children took swimming lessons, 600 children joined the Village summer recreation program and 1,800 Village pool passes were sold and last, but certainly not least, the beautiful old building on the northeast corner of Main Street and Deer Park Avenue is being restored - they're working even in the brutal weather. It will be a work of art when it is finished, and a tremendous asset to the Village. We had a nice crowd - it was fun to chat with Nancy Swan, "Mac" Beyers, Marjorie Fuhrmann, Elizabeth Karoly and others and the food was delicious too.

AND DON'T FORGET. This Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be a wine and cheese reception for Kathy Herzy's art exhibit at the Babylon Village Historical Society, co-sponsored by the Babylon Village Council on the Arts. Then on Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m., Kathy will demonstrate her painting skills and will actually pain a picture for the guests to observe. Kathy's work is very well known in our area, and many of us are proud owners of one of her paintings.
