Copiague loses to North Babylon in semis; McPherson, Chisolm stop Eagles

Photos by Garrett Mead
It was slated to be one of the better high school playoff games on Long Island this year. No one knew when the teams would meet or what the outcome would be, but anytime No. 1 North Babylon and No. 4 Copiague meet in the post-season, you're in for a treat.

North Babylon (20-1) was the victor of the contest, thanks to phenomenal play by Eugenia McPherson, who scored 20 points and Chanel Chisolm, who had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Copiague's Ieasia Walker scored a game high 21 points, and added six steals and four rebounds.

North Babylon then beat Commack, 71-67, in the Suffolk Class AA title game and beat Wyandanch, 65-52, in the school's first overall Suffolk County championship. McPherson had 22 points against Wyandanch.

Lindenhurst falls to Whitman

No one could beat them all year. Lindenhurst was quickly becoming Suffolk's most dominant team, but Whitman had other plans.

Whitman beat Lindenhurst, 55-49, in the Suffolk Class AA semifinals at Stony Brook University. Lindenhurst hadn't played in the semifinals since 1993, but made a valiant effort all year long. It'll be back with a talented roster next year, looking to improve on its 17-5 record.

Wyandanch led by Barbers

Every game for Chris and Cameron Barber is one step closer to their ultimate goal, winning a New York State title. Wyandanch beat Greenport, 68- 54, in the Suffolk Class B-C-D final with help from Chris, who scored a game high 21 points.

The parade continued when Wyandanch beat Kings Park, who was on a roll and beat powerhouse Amityville already in the playoffs, 74-72 in the Suffolk Small school title game. Both brothers had 26 points.

+Wyandanch girls basketball players defeated Southold/Greenport on Friday, Feb. 13, in the County Class B championship at Center Moriches High School, 4-32. Shown in photos are Jessica Little, #31 and Aniya Webb, #12.

Boxing at Lindenhurst

Lindenhurst High School hosted a night of live Golden Glove boxing sponsored by the NY Daily News. Now in its 80th year, the Golden Gloves amateur boxing circuit has been largely successful and travels to different places in New York City and Long Island to host their fights.

The Lindenhurst Football Touchdown Club helped sponsor the event. This was a preliminary event, which will lead to the Golden Gloves final at Madison Square Garden on April 19-20.

Reyes Loses at States

West Babylon's Jon Reyes, who had a stunning win in the 112-pound Suffolk County title bout, came up short at the state championships. Reyes beat Huntington's Stephen Reilly, 9-4, a week earlier, but another Long Islander, Wantagh's Paul Liguori was the victor of the 112-pound weight class at states.
