North Babylon graduate selected for promotion to lieutenant in the Army Reserve Cheryl A. Johnson-De Bear, a 1981 North Babylon High School graduate, has been selected for promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. She has redeployed to the Hawaii from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where she served as a member of Joint Task Force-GTMO in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While assigned at Guantanamo Bay, she served as the public information manager at the Joint Task Force Public Affairs office. Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners. Active duty and reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been deployed to support the war against global terrorism outside the borders of the United States. U.S. troops serve in South, Southwest and Central Asia, the Arabian peninsula, the Horn of Africa, islands in the Pacific, and Europe. Johnson-De Bear is the public affairs officer manager assigned to the 305th Press Camp Headquarters at Fort Shafter, Honolulu, Hawaii. The lieutenant colonel (select) has served in the military for 20 years. She is the daughter of Clifford H. and stepdaughter of Cynthia De Bear of Lindenhurst. Her mother is Eleanor P. De Bear of Deer Park.
In 1981, the officer graduated from North- Babylon High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1986 from State University of New York at Fredonia.
