Athletic Notebook
The hometeam rundowns
by Chris Vaccaro

For many high school athletes, the national letter of intent day is one of the most important days of the year, for others, it's just any ordinary day. Numerous athletes from high schools within the Town of Babylon signed to play sports at the collegiate level.

Babylon: Matt Griffo (Gettysburg lacrosse), Matt Martinez (Cornell lacrosse) and Taylor Reynolds (Navy lacrosse). Deer Park: Bo Budkevics (C.W. Post baseball) Lindenhurst: Tim Russo (Sacred Heart lacrosse) and Lauren Salvia (Central Connecticut State University soccer). North Babylon: Chanel Chisolm (Vanderbilt basketball) and Cori Kennedy (Stony Brook lacrosse).

Babylon: Girls winless in February

After beating Center Moriches for its only win of the season, 54-33, on Jan. 26, the Babylon girls basketball team has not won since. They finished the regular season 1-12 in league play.

Copiague: Boys basketball on easy street

Like the girl's team, the boys have not lost in a long time. The Eagles lost to North Babylon, 57-56, on Dec. 14 and haven't looked back since. They should be one of the top two seeds in the Suffolk Class A playoffs this week and will really need to brace themselves for the sudden good competition. Besides East and West Islip, every other team in League III finished with a winning percentage below .500. The Eagles had relatively easy wins over the last two months.

Lindenhurst: Girls basketball earns first win

It was a long and dreadful season (0-15) until Feb. 10 when the basketball gods let Lindenhurst finally win one. The Lady Bulldogs beat Patchogue-Medford, 36-35, in a battle of League I's last place teams. Rebecca Gumowski recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Bulldogs have one champion at tournament

Lindenhurst wrestler Dante Rosati was the school's only champion at the League I wrestling tournament. Rosati beat Sachem East's Paul Diorio 6-4 in the 130 pound bout.

North Babylon: Overtime brings good fortune

Junior Chris Welsh scored a career-high 26 points, while teammate Joe Moran scored the same amount in North Babylon's 90-85 win over Smithtown East. It was North Babylon's fifth win of the season.

Wyandanch: Barbers ready for the post-season

Chris and Cameron Barber had one goal this year, to get to the New York State final four. After an outstanding regular season, their first together on the varsity level, Chris a senior, and Cameron a junior, have developed into one of the most dangerous duos on the Island. Both brothers are averaging more than 20 points and eight rebounds per game. Besides a 77- 67 loss to Amityville on Feb. 10, this year's team has done everything as expected and should continue to make huge strides in the playoffs.
