Heard It On The Grapevine
SHE'S SO TALENTED! Drove out to the Southampton Library last week to see the exhibit of our own Shirley Wandel's beautiful photographs on display. Every photograph is a work of art. Spotted a lovely photo of the Richard Fallon family and also one of the Walter Olson family. How about a Conklin House exhibit of Shirley's work? She lived here in Babylon for many years, and many of us have prized Shirley Wandel's photos of our family in our homes. AND ANOTHER VERY TALENTED ARTIST. Elizabeth Karoly's art work is on display at the Babylon Library. A reception was held on Wednesday evening for the opening of the show. Elizabeth moved to Babylon ten years ago, and teaches painting and design at Nassau Community College. Stop by to see her work - it will be on display for a month. IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY. Councilman Lindsay Henry's cousin Timmie Murray was inaugurated as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts at ceremonies held recently and Lindsay and his brother James had a ball when they attended the ceremonies held in Boston where they enjoyed lots of parties and festivities. The newly elected Lieutenant Governor previously served as Mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts. It was truly an historic occasion as Duval Patrick was inaugurated as the first black Governor of the Commonwealth. IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE ANNUAL "Busy Women's" cocktail party held at Joy Torrey's home several weeks ago. We heard a lot about the delicious food, especially Mohammed's huge platter of jumbo shrimp and Gemelli's tasty dish, as well as the gals' gourmet hors d'oeuvres and the beautiful floral arrangement donated by Keyser's florist was admired by the guests. "Everyone" was there - our Mayor Ralph Scordino, Trustees Alice Vanderveldt and Kevin Muldowny and of course our County Legislator Wayne Horsley made the scene. Nancy Newton was the lucky winner of the Basket of Cheer. Thanks to all who worked so hard: "Packy" McGuines, Gene Turner and Joe Vanderveldt were great bartenders, Mary Rinklin and Nancy Swan sold lots of chances on the basket of cheer and last but certainly not least, let's hear it for the gals who worked so hard in the kitchen and for our lovely hostess, Joy Torrey. Another successful party for the scholarship fund which helps a Babylon High School student every year. WE HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT BIRTHDAY TO TELL YOU ABOUT. Yes, we want to send very Happy Birthday wishes to our mayor, Ralph Scordino who celebrated Saturday. We heard this happy news from an excellent source. Many happy returns Ralph. THREE GENERATIONS OF JOE VANDERVELDT'S got together when Joe Jr. and Joe III flew out to visit with Joan and Joe Sr. in their Garden Grove, California home last week. While in California they also visited with Joe's sisters Michelle Gilmore and her husband Blake and Liza and Poco Montfort. AND MORE TRAVELING VANDERVELDT'S. Meredith Vanderveldt has returned from a fabulous trip to Italy with 130 of her classmates at St. Anthony's High School. The kids saw just about everything in the country - Milan, Pisa, Venice, Florence etc. Then on Ash Wednesday they had the thrill of a lifetime when they sang for the Pope at St. Peter's Basillica. DON'T FORGET TO CALL to make your reservation to hear the Irish Story Teller, Jim Hawkins at the Conklin House on Sunday, March 11, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Jim has performed at the Conklin House before and his humorous stories and songs de lighted the audience. Don't be left out - call 631-669- 8164 now. II WAS A SPECIAL TREAT for these Babylon gals when they drove out to Southampton to see the exhibit of Shirley Wandel's photography. Shown at the library, left to right, are Shirley Skeffington, Sue Howell, Shirley Wandel and Muriel Verschurren.
