Babylon math students participate in college tournament

High school students countywide participate in the Suffolk County Mathematics Teachers Association's (SCMTA) annual tournament held at Suffolk Community College. Participating are a more select group of mathematicians than those competing on math teams and in the annual math contest, explains Math Director K-12 Daniel Drance, who adds, "These students are the best of the best!" At the competition, Babylon School District - again one of the smallest public school districts at the competition - finished in fifth place in the Upper Division, just behind Ward Melville, Commack and Northport. Babylon Junior Senior High School was the solo South Shore public school district in the Top Ten, joining much larger districts with four and five times the population. Comprising Babylon's Upper Division Team were Samantha Lipman, Don Pietrowski, Aditya Ramanathan, Brian Shaw and Yining Shao. Yining, also known as Nick, distinguished himself with individual honors, finishing third in his grade (11th). Asked about the difficulty of math, Shaw replied, "Concepts are easy to remember." Shaw is interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
