West Islip swimmers and divers win League II title

From the first days of the Boys Varsity Swim Season, Coach Bob Kollar had a good feeling about his group of swimmers and divers. He expressed to them that they alone control their fate. With the leadership of its 11 seniors, the team set their sites on success. As the season progressed, the team members went on to a 6-0-1 League II record, achieving a tie with Connetquot for first place in the league standings.

At the League II Championship Meet, the team had only one thing in mind and that was how well they would perform. In the first event, Wesley Winter, Chris Goodwin, Justin Pascone and Brendan O'Hara set the tone by dropping enough time for a second place finish. This was all the team needed and the adrenaline was flowing. Andrew Culmo placed first in the One Meter Dive. Mike Regan finished fourth in the 100 Freestyle. Justin Pascone was fourth in the 100 Fly. Wesley Winter placed second and fourth in the 100 Backstroke and 50 Freestyle. The defining moment came in the last relay.

Down by three points, the relay team needed to finish ahead to claim the league title. Mike Regan led the race, giving the team a lead. Jonathan Eiseman, Justin Pascone and Wesley Winter never relinquished that lead. The team won the meet by eight points, giving the members the league title. Coaches Kollar and Schubert stated how proud they were of the boys and their efforts all season long. The team was also honored by the Suffolk Officials Association, which presented the Sportsmanship Award for the 2006-07 season to West Islip.

The following week, Andrew Culmo won the One Meter Dive, crowning him Suffolk County Champ and earning him a trip to Buffalo to represent Section XI and West Islip at the New York State Championships.
