Alleghany Avenue School in Lindenhurst welcomes new principal

Lindenhurst's Alleghany Avenue Elementary School welcomed the newest member to the Alleghany family, Principal Laura J. Newman. Newman, a former assistant principal and director of pupil personnel, was recently named the Alleghany Avenue Elementary School principal. She comes to the Lindenhurst Schools with 20 years of experience.

Newman most recently was the director of pupil personnel for the Hauppauge Public Schools. Also at Hauppauge, she served as assistant director of special education. Newman implemented many special programs, supervised math and reading teachers, clerical staff and over 600 classified students. She began her career in 1987 as a teacher and resource room educator in the Elwood School District. She was also assistant principal at the James H. Boyd Intermediate School in Elwood, where she laid the foundation for her experience here at Lindenhurst.

Newman is looking forward to being a part of the Lindenhurst community. "It appears to be a close, supportive community w h e r e people are focused on the children's best interests," stated Newman. "My years of experience and background should allow for a smooth transition." While at Alleghany Avenue, Newman hopes to build strong relationships with the parents, staff and community to ensure the most success for each student.

Newman holds a bachelor's and a master's degree from St. John's University. She also completed the SAS/ SDA program at SUNY Stony Brook.
