Cacciola tapped as new Superintendent in WBSD
by Carolyn James

Even before he makes his first decision as the new School Superintendent in West Babylon, Anthony Cacciola will have given the students of that district one of the most important educational lessons of their lives: if you work hard and stay committed to your goal, success will follow.

Cacciola, who replaces longtime principal, administrator and superintendent Mel Noble as of July 1, lived that lesson himself. As a 15-year-old student in the district, he took a part-time position as a school janitor. Following his graduation from West Babylon High School in 1979, Cacciola became a full-time custodian and worked nights attending Suffolk Community College and then C.W. Post during the day to fulfill a dream of becoming a music teacher. In 1983, he was tapped by the district for a head custodian's position and served in that post until 1986 when he became Chief Custodian. He continued his education earning a master's degree in business administration in 1993 and was named the district's business administrator. He became assistant superintendent for busi- ness in 2000.

Despite his move from music to finance, Cacciola said he loves his job and continues to love music, coaching and theater.

"There is no question that I have a different background than most who aspire to this role, but I am very pleased to have been appointed," said Cacciola. "I love this district and I love serving the students and residents here. This community is and has always been important part of my life."

The contract between Cacciola and the district is for five years, through June 29, 2012. The board can extend the contract, before or at the time of its expiration, under the agreement signed in December.

"We had a number of applicants including Mr. Cacciola who had the educational and administrative experience we were looking for," said Trustee and former Board President Lucy Campasano. "But Mr. Cacciola had the advantage in that he had a personal knowledge of the school district and a commitment to it that no one else had."

Under the terms of the agreement, the new superintendent will start at a salary of $198,000 a year. In July 2008, that increases to $200,000; in July 2009, to $205,000; in June 2011 to $220,000 and in July 2011 to $215,000.

In addition, he will receive 25 vacation days, which cannot be accrued; up to 12 sick days per fiscal year and pay 15 percent of the cost of his medical and hospital insurance. The district will provide him with a $200,000 life insurance policy.

As part of the contract, the board will conduct regular evaluations of the superintendent's performance, which will be put in writing and given to him.
