Performance of "Swingtime Rosie" to be shown March 10 and 11
The World War II era and the effort and events on the home front has become an extremely hot topic recently. Whether it's Tom Brokow's Greatest Generation or Clint Eastwood's nominated films Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers, young people today have a thirst to understand those times and older folks a need to look back with pride. As Brokow states, "America's citizen heroes and heroines who came of age...went on to build modern America. This generation was united not only by a common purpose, but also by common values - duty, honor, economy, courage, service, love of family and country and above all, responsibility for oneself."
It is against this backdrop that a musical tribute to the times Swingtime Rose has been created by the Star Playhouse housed at the Suffolk Y JCC. The music of the period, which reflected the sentiment of America has been melded with a story line conceived and directed by Bob Wildfeuer of Plainview with musical arrangements by Chet Wallace of Deer Park. Included in the production among over 40 songs of the era are ballads that told of a longing for a return to a peaceful time.
Performance dates are Saturdays, March 10 and 24, 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 11, 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. The Star Playhouse is located at the Suffolk Y-JCC, 74 Hauppauge Rd., Commack. Ticket prices are $21 for non-members, $18 for Y members, $16 for seniors and students and $14 for Y seniors and students. Group rates are available.
