Babylon resident fundraising for El Salvador

Sheena Mendez, a resident of Babylon and a student at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, spent her spring break last year with Habitat for Humanity in El Salvador. A biology major, she is also working toward a minor in Spanish and used the opportunity to hone her skills in the language. But she also got a first-hand view of life in El Salvador, an experience, she said, that has changed her forever.

"We got a chance to learn about a new culture, a different form of government and the hardships of living in a third world country," said Mendez. "I also learned that if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem."

As a result, Mendez is reaching out to her friends and neighbors in Babylon asking for their help in bringing some relief- and hope- to the people of El Salvador, particularly the town of Tierra Blanca, where she spent her time. Funds raised go toward helping the people there build homes, schools and medical facilities.

Anyone who would like to contribute can send a check made out to Sacred Heart El Salvador Delegation, c/o Sheena Alanna Mendez, 191 Hawthorne Ave., Babylon NY 11704.
