Keeping Right on Track
The Girls' Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Steve Borbet received the New York State Coach of the Year Honor Award for 2006 from the New York State Coaches Association. It is a well-deserved recognition for all of his hard work and dedication to the sport and more importantly to the team who reap the benefits of his expertise and winning tradition. Steve has coached a total of 106 seasons at both the high school and college level in both boys' and girls' cross country, winter track and spring track and field during his professional career. He has coached at Bay Shore High School for 17 years. Steve's illustrious career ranged from Hofstra University to Stony Brook, Half Hollow Hills and ultimately, and fortunately for our school district - Bay Shore. Twenty-one of his athletes have won county championships. His overall coaching record in dual meets in all three running sports is 361 wins and 49 losses. His coaching record by seasons: cross country boys 83-13 and girls 52-10; winter track boys 55-9 and girls 38-0; spring track & field boys 69-9 and girls 64-8. His teams have won 29 league championships in girls' competition and 20 for boys with 10 girls' and 11 boys' division championships, and 20 girls' country championships and 3 boys' championships. His teams have won 4 national championships and 2 national records. Twentyfive of his athletes have won state championships and he has been named coach of the year 23 times.
