They always respond to the call, remarkably

A review of recent headlines in the Beacon points to the work of our many fire department volunteers and the commitment they make to protecting the public and preserving property.

In Lindenhurst, firefighters fought a major blaze at a marina there. Conditions were dreadful as the water they poured in the massive building turned to ice in sub zero temperatures as it hit the ground. Firefighters sustained minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

On Third Street in West Babylon, a home went ablaze as a result of a faulty portable heater. More than 40 volunteers rushed to the scene and put out the blaze. Fortunately no one was hurt.

And again another fire. This time at a strip of commercial buildings in Copiague, where firefighters had to rescue a woman and her child from the burning building. Construction of the building made it difficult and dangerous to fight and a partial collapse of a roof there posed additional problems.

Yet, our volunteers hear the call and respond, time and time again. Their sense of duty is magnificent and their work much appreciated.
