Joseph Maniaci: 96, “The Legend Barber”

Longtime West Islip resident Joseph Maniaci was a wizard with scissors and a legend for cutting hair. For 85 years he lopped off tons of hair in his own shop in Ozone Park, Queens and then part time in West Islip until he was 91 years old.

Mr. Maniaci died January 22, 2007 at the age of 96.

For more than 30 years he lived on Myrtle Avenue in West Islip and was a longtime Knights of Columbus member in Queens and later in West Islip. Mr. Maniaci was a Holy Name member and a dedicated parishioner of St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon.

Mr. Maniaci leaves behind his children: Alphonso and Paula, Maria and Bernie Papocchia and John and Patricia; his brother, Martin; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; as well as other loved ones and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Lena.

He reposed at the Frederick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home on January 23, 2007. A Celebration of Liturgy of Christian Burial was held January 24, 2007 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon followed by interment in St. Charles Cemetery.
