OLG Angels win first game of basketball tournament
Throughout the game, the Angels maintained a spread of no less than a 12 points, with solid shooting from Paige O'Connor, Christina Esposito and Courtney Pomarico. Nice outside shooting by Jessie Mazur and a solid defense by Kendra Shuler, kept the crowd cheering. Even a tumble on the court by O'Connor, No. 7, that sent her off court limping but not seriously hurt, didn't slow the team down. During the first half, the Angels scored 26 points to the Mercy's 7, but the Hicksville team came out strong in the second half, racking up 11 points to the humbled Angel's 10 in the third quarter. "I told them to go out there and play "their" game," said Mercy's coach, Debbie Sauer in talking about the players turnaround after half time. "I said they should be aggressive and play like a team which is what they have done all year long." But even that wasn't enough to keep up with the Angels, who eventually won the game, 52-31. "The girls enjoyed a successful season because of their outstanding effort and commitment to each other," said Angels' coach Scott Mazur. But that victory was the final one of the season for the Angels who eventually lost the second game of the playoffs. Despite that Mazur said his team had an outstanding season. "Out of 40 teams in the CYO, they were one of eight to make it to into the second round," he said. "We're looking forward to next year."
