Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy named “Local Official of the Year” by National Association of Home Builders at Florida convention The National Association of Home Builders will honor Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy as a Local Official of the Year this week at its annual convention in Orlando, Florida. Levy is one of four local officials selected nationwide for the honor. He was nominated by the Long Island Builders Institute for his work on behalf of affordable housing, for reducing regulatory delays and for creating jobs in the home building industry. In particular, he was cited for his Red Tape Reduction Plan to shorten the processing time for applications to the County's Department of Health Services and the Public Works Department. The plan cut the review time by the departments from 16 weeks to four weeks. "We nominated County Executive Levy for this honor," said LIBI President Victor Irizarry, "because we believe he sets a standard of performance that should serve as an example to local officials nationwide. "Many local officials give lip ser- vice to the concerns of home builders, the need for more affordable housing and job creation in the building industry: Steve Levy gets results. His 'hands on' management style assures all concerned that he has set clear priorities and wants prompt results. We would like to see public officials nationwide follow his example." "Long Island, long-recognized as the nation's first suburb, faces a serious crisis in the lack of affordable housing for our present generation," said Levy. "It is an honor to be recognized by NAHB on behalf of the thousands of young people who will be able to stay on Long Island, where they grew up, to establish careers and families because of the steps we have taken in Suffolk County to reduce and eliminate the barriers to creating affordable, workforce housing."
The award will be presented on February 7 at a breakfast of the State and Local Government Affairs Committee of the National Association of Home Builders. Three other local officials from Tennessee, Virginia and Washington State will also be honored.
